It is more important now to find out
what other people are saying about your business than developing promotional
strategies inside your conference room. You may be the owner of a renowned
multinational or a local restaurant; it is successful only if people talk good
about it. Because the moment people say good things about your business, other
people would be interested to try it out for their needs. So are you collecting
the reviews from your customers? If not yet, let me tell you where you are
missing out.
There are websites like Yelp,
foursquare, and many others, which are dedicated to customer reviews and
discussions on their forums. You will find hundreds and even thousands of
people reviewing a particular restaurant, theatre, shopping destination,
website, etc for everyone else to know. These reviews and feedback can be both
negative as well as positive. Negative reviews or criticism are not always bad
for your business as long as you keep a tab on them. The moment you see anyone
talking negative or complaining about your business, take time to understand
the issue and post a reply immediately before it spreads like wildfire. Many
websites post links as well that connect your site with them so that customers
have a firsthand view of the business website being talked about.
Reviews and feedback are a blessing
in disguise. The only thing you need to maintain consistently is unparallel
service and product delivery for which your customers would never shift their
base to your competitors. Moreover, the moment you do something wrong and your
customers point it out, make sure you rectify it. It may be bad service or low
quality product. Once you rectify, you win the faith and trust of your
customers and they would themselves take the responsibility of promoting your business.
Yes it’s true and has taken place a number of times for many businesses!
Feedback that you receive from your
customers can be put up on your website itself for first time visitors to see.
It is obvious that they will be relying on your customer’s testimonials more
than relying on what you say. Many companies who are into service based
businesses have very effectively utilized customer reviews on their homepages
so that it is visible on the landing page itself or in a separate page. To give
you few examples, check out the websites of TricycleMedia and BusinessPro Designs. Both are website designing companies with a very good track
record as visible from their satisfied clients’ testimonials.
Remember one thing – the customer
feedback that you receive acts as the validation for the promises that you
make. If you are sure that you are delivering as you promised then try
generating as much reviews as possible to promote your claims. These reviews
can also be in the form of videos or you can make customers post their pictures
on your website while they use your product or service. These will just add to
the validation process for new visitors on your website. Hence you can only
imagine the power of customer reviews for your business. It can make or break
your business so be careful in what you promise and what you deliver to the end
user. Promote your reviews and see your business grow in no time!

Small businesses can promote
their brands, products or services by taking advantage of social media. With
the help of a high speed or wireless
internet, they can update their pages at a good time of the day wherever
they go. But, using social media for promoting businesses can become
overwhelming for a business owner who is new to social promotion.
Here are some hints on how to use
social media for your business’ advantage.
Tip 1. Provide sneak previews of upcoming products. Doing this can build
anticipation and help give significant feedback in order to help you have a
flawless launch. You may, for example, post pictures on various social
networking sites and invite followers or fans to leave their comments.
Tip 2. Exploit your own expertise. Your company’s studies might not run
wild but sharing helpful information you have learned from experience may pave
a great way towards enhancing your product’s name. For example if you are
selling make up, you can help your fans or followers by sharing your knowledge
on how to apply make up for various occasions or simple make up tricks for busy
ladies.
Tip 3. Show what your business does. Since social media is so interlinked
with multimedia, connecting to fans and followers lets you demonstrate your
business’ value more than words can say. Post videos of your products at work.
Or if you sell services, take actual videos of your employers during work.
Tip 4. Take advantage of content sharing. If you want to increase traffic
into your website, promote your business by allowing visitors to share your
content. For example, if you are into fashion modeling business, you can post
videos of your auditions for models and letting viewers share the video links
to your website. To encourage visitors to chare your content, you can install
widgets like AddThis in order to automate linking to most viewed sites.
Tip 5. Honesty goes a long, long way. Transparency is really important in
promoting trust among customers and would-be customers. Posting current
information about your business on your blog is one want to show transparency.
You can also post information about your sales and profits to demonstrate that
your business is on good financial conditions.
Tip 6. Be careful when dealing with others. Even if say, you have bad
experiences with other people or businesses, just stay civil when dealing with
these problems. Don’t even resort to name-calling or making intrigues as it can
hurt your business’ reputation.
Tip 7. Truly mingle with visitors. Placing a business page or a company
blog is not enough if you don’t interact with your visitor’s comments. If your
consumers have questions or need help in something, be ready to provide them
with answers. You can even ask them about their opinions on your next product
and truly incorporate what they want or like.
Tip 8. Avoid creating your own substitute. With all of the things running
on your business, it’s difficult to keep up. However, automating social media
has some hazards, too. For example, if you get tired about welcoming new
followers and just use automation tools to do this, your new followers might
think that you are spamming them with automated messages.

A new company called Blekko aims to help you do just that by drilling down into Web content using what the company calls "slashtags" -- subject-specific search terms that you put at the end of your searches preceded by a slash "/".
The new search engine launched a public beta on Monday, and is now open for anyone to try. Blekko may not be a strong contender to take out search leaders Google and Bing anytime soon, but Blekko certainly takes an interesting approach that's worth a try if you're looking to customize your daily Web searches.
Blekko's core approach is to use subject-specific search terms called slashtags that help you narrow down your search results. Say you were looking for reviews about Apple's iPad. You would type into Blekko "iPad /reviews" and your search results would list mostly reviews of the iPad from various magazines and tech blogs. If you typed in "Obama /news" you would end up with a list of news results about the President. By default, the "/news" slashtag is organized by most recent news items, but you can easily click on the "/relevance" slashtag at the top of the results page to have your news results about Obama organized by relevance instead.
Blekko has a variety of predefined slashtags you can use such as "/people" for a people search, "/blogs" for blog search, "/flickr" for Flickr search and so on. There are also a variety of topic slashtags such as "/basketball," "/movie-reviews" and "/android" to name a few. Finally, there are also a few slashtags called "api" slashtags listed on the left side of the results page that use search engines from other sites. You can search Amazon products on Blekko, for example, by using the slashtag "/shopping" or YouTube with "/video."
